One remote island in the English Channel is the perfect destination if you want to get away from it all - and you can do it from £40 a night.
Lihou, located off the west coast of Guernsey in the English Channel, was once home to a thriving seaweed harvesting industry but is now completely deserted. Now, the only place to stay is a single house run by the Lihou Charitable Trust.
Holidaymakers can book the tiny island just two hours from the UK where they'll be the only residents on the island. That exclusivity means there's no shops on Lihou, so remember to bring plenty of food supplies.
Part of its appeal - and challenge - is its remoteness. Access to Lihou is tricky, with a rocky causeway from Guernsey only accessible at low tide for about two weeks every month. Not to mention travellers will need to carry all your luggage across a slippery quarter-mile causeway before the sea covers it again.
Lihou is the perfect place to disconnect. There's no TV or sound system and mobile signal is patchy, so visitors are encouraged to enjoy the natural beauty of the place.
Among the local attractions are the island's old priory ruins which are a must-see for visitors. The Venus Pool is probably the biggest tourist attraction. Forming at low tide, it is perfect for a splash when the weather is warm and it's deep enough to jump in from the side.
Make sure to pack a camera to catch all the local wildlife. Lihou is a key nesting and resting spot for gulls and waders, as well as migrating birds, making it a great place for birdwatchers.
The house can be booked by anyone, except those planning an 18th or 21st birthday party or stag dos, due to "unfortunate past experiences".
