A former Strangeways prison officer believes that serial killer Robert Maudsley, also known as 'Hannibal the Cannibal', should be removed from solitary confinement.
Maudsley is currently the longest-serving prisoner in the UK's penal system. The Liverpool-born murderer has spent 50 consecutive Christmases behind bars for his crimes.
At the age of 21, Maudsley was imprisoned for murder in 1974 and has been kept separate from other prisoners for 45 years after killing three more inmates. Special arrangements were made for him at Wakefield Prison - known as Monster Mansion - including a glass cell.

Now Neil Samworth, who worked at Strangeways and Salford's Forest Bank prison, and has written two books about his experiences believes Maudsley should be taken out of the bullet-proof cell, according to the Daily Star.
Retired, Mr Samworth said: "I think it's wrong the way he has been treated. He is in total isolation and is not fair. I think his crimes are historic now and he represents no real danger to others. It's a bit like Charlie Bronson. Yes, he has had lots of fights in the past but he is an old man now.'"
The violent prisoner has only been seen once since he was locked up, in a documentary filmed over 40 years ago. When he leaves his special cell, four guards are always with him.
Maudsley, who has killed four people including three fellow inmates, has been asking to be moved to a better place for a long time. Over 20 years ago, he wrote: "The prison authorities see me as a problem, and their solution has been to put me into solitary confinement and throw away the key, to bury me alive in a concrete coffin."
"It does not matter to them whether I am mad
