The Traitors ' Paul Gorton has been the TV villain that fans love to hate on the BBC One competition, fully embracing his role as a devious traitor before becoming the latest contestant to be banished from the show. However, the Manchester-based business manager nearly didn't make it on the show after a serious injury put him in hospital just four weeks before filming started in Scotland. Paul, 36, told OK! in an exclusive interview that he worried about his place on the show after a game of football left him with a collapsed lung.
"My lung collapsed four weeks before going on the show," he said. "I was recovered in time for the show but it was from a football injury, someone banged into me. "My lung collapsed.
I was outside A&E, screaming and crying, and I was on morphine and CAT scans and all that type of stuff. I nearly had an emergency operation to re-inflate my lung because it had depressed so much, and yeah, it was chaos." He added, "They also couldn't give me the painkillers that I needed to be on because it affected my body in a different way. So I went through all this type of stuff, and then in the back of my brain, I was going, 'Oh my God, in four weeks I'm actually going on The Traitors.'" The recovery period proved to be difficult for Paul's partner Kate, who took on most of the work when it came to looking after their one-year-old son Charlie.
"I'm a really hands on dad and Kate had to do an awful lot of stuff because I couldn't pick Charlie up for a good chunk of time," he said. "But I tried to do as much as I could, but being injured at home and not being hands on and stuff like that was so tough. And I was just starting a new job.
