The 43-year-old drank gin and took cocaine while watching a Bear Grylls show on Netflix before hitting the road hours later. Ms Atherton, 47, tragically died in the crash.
But Marsh claimed she had grabbed the wheel of his Ford Fiesta immediately before the collision, the Liverpool Echo reports. He went on to be convicted of killing her, with members of Ms Atherton's family crying 'yes' in the public gallery at Liverpool Crown Court.

Following a trial, the jury of four men and eight women reached a unanimous verdict that Marsh was guilty of causing death by dangerous driving. Marsh had previously admitted the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday afternoon (January 10) after two hours and 41 minutes of deliberations by a jury of four men and eight women. Marsh, who showed no reaction then sat with his head bowed, will be sentenced today (Thursday) having been remanded into custody.
Judge David Aubrey KC, who presided over the trial, told him he faced an "inevitable custodial sentence" and added: "I am satisfied so that I am sure that Michelle Atherton did not grab the steering wheel of the Ford Fiesta or make any attempt so to do.
