Thirty years ago, Manchester United took on Sheffield Wednesday in April of the maiden Premier League season with only five games remaining to catch league leaders Aston Villa. Little did the Reds know this game would give birth to a new phrase in football’s lexicon and signal the beginning of the club’s most successful period in its history.
However, Steve Bruce’s heroics to kickstart United’s march toward their first title in over 26 years might never have happened, if it weren't for linesman John Hilditch.
Heading into the fixture, United needed to win to have a realistic chance of catching up to Villa and ultimately achieving Premier League glory. Originally, John Martin was pencilled in to be the official, but an injury sustained in training the day before led to Mike Peck being substituted in at the last minute.

Hilditch, who was scheduled to run the line that evening, reflected on the change in official: “I turned up on the day thinking that John Martin was going to be the referee. But when I walked into the changing room it was Mike Peck, apparently John had been training the day before and pulled a muscle.”
That wouldn’t be the only unforeseen change in the officiating team. On the hour mark, Peck would be forced off with a muscle injury. Hilditch had started the game in his usual role of linesman but would replace Peck to take the whistle - and nobody could’ve foreseen his impact on the title race.
The Stoke-on-Trent-born official would make a huge call just five minutes later, awarding a penalty to the visitors after midfielder Paul Ince’s reckless challenge took Chris Waddle to the ground.
