‘Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant’ review: Afghanistan War film is muddled

“The Covenant” and the long-delayed “Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre,” the suddenly prolific British genre filmmaker has a new project set up by Black Bear International. The new film, with a title and plot under-wraps, is being prepped for buyers at Cannes and will mark a class reunion of sorts.

Paramount announced that “Yellowstone” will end with the second half of Season 5, which will premiere in November. This news comes amid rumors flying of a feud between creator Taylor Sheridan, 52, and star Kevin Costner, 68, who was apparently “stunned” by his wife filing for divorce.However, that’s not all. Right after the ending of “Yellowstone” premieres, there will be a “sequel series.” The network has not yet revealed the title, cast or plot details of the “sequel series,” but it will premiere in December, immediately following the ending of “Yellowstone.” It’s likely that “Yellowstone” stars such as Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will be in it, and it’s probable that this is the “Yellowstone” show that will star Matthew McConaughey.

This quickly escalates to a violent confrontation as Officer TJ Meadows III accidentally shoots and kills his partner, Officer Kevin Cooper, with his backup gun. Years later, no longer a cop and still traumatized, he moves back to Pittsburgh and finds his way to his partner’s widow, Kacie (Delevingne). They slowly fall in love as Kacie confronts the history she’s been avoiding, including telling her 15-year-old son, Ralph, TJ’s back-story.

I’m not sure why director Guy Ritchie has his name in the title of his latest film, but because this is I think the best Ritchie movie I have seen, I will pass up the chance to snark at the only misstep in Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. It about as exciting, gripping and moving as war films get — especially one set in the murky Afghanistan conflict in which the U.S. found itself immersed for more than two decades.
