“Sir Bobby, the legacy you left us with. History, dignity & integrity. Our promise to you. We will protect that legacy and keep the red flag flying high" - the words on a banner erected outside Old Trafford today. Manchester United invited supporters to gather for Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral procession and they turned out in their droves.
Some fans had travelled hours to attend at Old Trafford and others had requested time off from work, but they all had something in common; they wanted to pay their respects to a legend.
Sir Bobby's passing last month, at the age of 86, left the football world in mourning and one supporter, speaking prior to the arrival of the funeral cortège, was too overwhelmed with emotion to be interviewed.

Jayne was able to speak and said: "He was a great footballer and he played with true sportsmanship. I think the new generation could learn a lot from him and he conducted himself well on the pitch and away from it."
The mood was sombre around the stadium, but there was warm applause for a lifelong supporter, aged 83, who proudly gave a rendition of 'we've got Bobby Charlton in our team, we've got the best team in the land'.
The generations came together to welcome the funeral procession. There were hundreds of young supporters and more senior fans, some of whom had the privilege of watching Charlton do what he loved most in the flesh.
There were tales about Charlton shared and fondest memories exchanged on the Old Trafford forecourt, while some chose to solemnly stand instead, waiting to bid their final goodbye to an all-time great.
