Gavin and Stacey will reportedly be returning to TV screens for a Christmas special later this year, five years after it was last on air. The popular sitcom last aired on Christmas Day 2019, ending with a huge cliffhanger as fan-favourite character Nessa (Ruth Jones) proposed to Smithy (James Corden). Now Deadline has reported that the show is set to make its highly-anticipated return, with the new episode currently in pre-production, with filming scheduled for this summer.
It's thought that the majority of the show's cast will make a return to their roles, including the titular Gavin and Stacey, played by Matthew Horne and Joanna Page respectively. The outlet reports that the episode will be produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow, Jones’ Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, which is co-owned by Corden. James and Ruth, who both appeared in and created the show, reunited late last year, with this sparking hope in fans that a potential TV return could be on the cards.
After the show came to an end in 2010, before returning for the first Christmas special in 2019, James found huge success on both sides of the Atlantic, eventually relocating to America, where he hosted The Late Late Show for seven years. However, back in 2022, he announced that he would be quitting the show and returning to the UK, with his final episodes airing in April 2023. James had previously teased a potential Gavin and Stacey return during an interview with BBC Radio 2's Vernon Kay, as he said: "I wish I could say it’s up to me.
The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it’s Ruth and I, and, if I’m being completely honest, her judgment is exceptional.

Gavin And Stacey is officially set to make a comeback after five years. The BBC sitcom – starring James Corden and Ruth Jones – is set to return for another Christmas special, which is expected to be filmed over the summer, according to Deadline. It is also believed that the majority of the main cast will likely return for the special. The last time they made an appearance was in the 2019 Christmas special which was left on a cliffhanger, with Nessa (Ruth) proposing to Corden’s character Smithy, and the episode ending before he could provide an answer. The news comes after stars of the BBC show have constantly said it was unlikely to make a return in recent years.Joanna Page, who played Stacey in the sitcom, was the latest to play down the chances of a Gavin And Stacey comeback back in November, despite fans hoping that Corden moving back to the UK following his eight-year stint hosting The Late Late Show in the US would increase the chances of a return.Speaking to MailOnline, Page said at the time: “I can see them never doing any more because it was nice to leave it on a cliffhanger because it’s up to the viewer to imagine what would have happened. So I can imagine them ending it like that.”“I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t get the call, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I did,” she continued.
