A family has told of their heartbreak after two siblings were diagnosed with cancer shortly after losing their sister to the cruel disease.
Laura McGovern, 34, from Cumbernauld, was shocked to find out she had breast cancer just a couple of months after the tragic passing of her big sister Donna McKie in 2018.
The close-knit family were then dealt another horrific blow, when brother Kevin Brady, 42, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer three years later.
Mum-of-two Donna, who was 41, had been suffering from severe back pain for years, was diagnosed with sarcoma. Sarcoma is a rare cancer that affects the tissues that connect, support and surround other body structures and organs.
Laura, who is mum to 11-year-old Millie, said: "By the time Donna's cancer was discovered, it was too late for her. We were all devastated."
Whilst grieving for Donna, Laura said she started to have a burning sensation in her armpit. A few months later, she found a lump when itching her breast.
She explained: "It was an itch that I just couldn't get rid of, I was clawing at it. I suddenly felt a lump. It was like a little Malteser under my skin. My husband Alan told me to get it checked ASAP as his mum had passed away from cancer years before.
Given her family history and the lump, Laura was referred for checks. She said she knew it was bad news when she was told to bring someone with her for the results.
She said: "When I was first diagnosed I was told that my prognosis was good as it hadn't spread and they had caught it early."
Laura said doctors were confident that her cancer had been caught and treated early and was told to 'enjoy her life'.
Tragically her happiness was cut short when her brother Kevin was diagnosed with cancer the following year.
