Gary Neville was full of praise for Harry Maguire after Manchester United's much-maligned captain on Sunday scored his first Premier League goal of the season to open the scoring against Leeds United.
The derby clash, the first in front of fans at Elland Road since 2011, was played in dreadful conditions as the UK continues to feel the effects of Storm Eunice, and it was Ralf Rangnick's side who landed the first blow.
Luke Shaw's set-piece delivery was headed home by the skipper for United's first goal from a corner in 140 attempts.
"That statistic was becoming a bit of an embarrassment [no goals from 139 corners this season]. Harry Maguire, questions before the game about him but he attacks it. It's Llorente, who he just mauls.
"He knows he's got the flight of the ball and uses the pace on it - it’s a really good header and it’s past Meslier before he can react. It's the Manchester United captain who puts them 1-0 up."
Maguire has faced calls from section of the United support to lose the captaincy and be dropped after a string of below-par displays, though his manager, Rangnick, continues to back the defender.
He said: "It's never been an issue. It's me who decides who will be captain. Harry is our captain and will stay as our captain until the end of the season. There is nothing else to say on that."
