Paul McShane was 17, living in digs with Tom Heaton and it was nine months since he got off the plane from Ireland when he lifted the FA Youth Cup. Almost 20 years on, he still regards it as one of the best years of his career.
McShane, now 36, is back at Manchester United in an innovative player-coach role with the Under-23s. Retirement is looming and he has not played since October, but he is enjoying the transition to full-time coach.
It is another key week for the academy. The Under-18s have the privilege of playing at Old Trafford for the second time in a month against Leicester in the quarter-finals of the Youth Cup on Thursday night, just as McShane did in the final 19 years ago.
The former Republic of Ireland international stood out in United's two-legged win against Middlesbrough in 2003. Every Youth Cup-winning United squad has produced a player to go on and play at least 50 times for the first-team, with Kieran Richardson the sole player to do so from the McShane's class.
United beat Middlesbrough 3-1 over two legs 19 years ago and received the Youth Cup at Old Trafford in front of David Beckham, Roy Keane, Gary Neville and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
"I think a couple came down," McShane told the MEN. "What sticks in my mind is the next few days when you come into the training ground and you feel brilliant, you feel 10ft tall, you have David Beckham and Roy Keane, Gary Neville, all the Class of 92 and all the foreign players congratulating you on winning the Youth Cup.
"My biggest memory of that was speaking with Beckham after it. He was saying the time he won it and stuff, so that was quite a conversation at 17 years of age, with David Beckham, sharing the same experience at that age.
