At the end of last week, The Times published their list of The 45 best wine bars in Britain, describing the new brigade of wine hangouts as "small, sexy and stylish". The first outside of London to rank on the list is Yellowhammer in Stockport's Old Town, a bakery, wine bar and pottery studio set up by the team behind the acclaimed Where the Light Gets In. It opened last May in the former Tudor Café on Stockport’s Underbanks, and is a collaboration between chef Samuel Buckley, potter Joe Hartley and baker Rosie Wilkes.
Coming in at number 23, the guide notes the wine bar's back-of-house ceramic studio, which makes the plates on which the carefully curated dishes are served on. As well as a variety of sweet and savoury bites, from traditional French baguettes and leek and butter buns to candied orange teacakes and marmalade cream buns, the bar serves up a number of wines by the glass, and also invites wine growers and experts into the space for regular wine nights.
