This is one of three hero police officers who ran to the scene of a major gun incident linked to a series of violent attacks and a murder. Off-duty inspector Bruce Crawford and two uniformed colleagues helped bring the incident under control on Wednesday morning after being called to a house in the remote Ross-shire village of Dornie.
There police found osteopath John Don Mackenzie and wife Fay lying injured. Fay had been shot in the head and her husband also violently attacked.
Experienced senior officer Crawford, who lives in the area, wasn’t working at the time but rushed to help his two colleagues, who were already on the scene. Their actions allowed police to promptly announce there was no threat to the wider public.
Crawford used to work in Skye, 28 miles away, but is now a member of Police Scotland's firearms licensing department.
A source said: “All three officers helped bring the incident to an end. They are real heroes who put the safety of the public before their own.”
John was rushed 70 miles to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where his condition is said to be critical. Fay was taken to Broadford Hospital on Skye but discharged.
Police Scotland were first alerted at about 9am on Wednesday to reports that a 32-year-old woman, Rowena MacDonald, had been stabbed in her home in Tarskavaig, Skye. She was airlifted to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QUEH) in Glasgow for treatment.
Thirty minutes later, they were called to a house in nearby Teangue, where they found the body of Rowena’s brother-in-law John MacKinnon, 47. He had suffered gunshot wounds. Police were then told of the incident in Dornie in which John and Fay, both 63, had been allegedly attacked with a firearm.
