Broadcaster Fiona Phillips has shared the sad news that she has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, revealing to the Mirror that it has "ravaged" her family and now it has "come for" her too. Fiona and her husband, This Morning editor Martin Frizell, have opened up about how the illness has impacted their marriage, with Martin, 64, telling The Mirror that he has had to ramp up his husband duties following his wife's diagnosis.
He told the outlet: "Before I didn’t ever have to worry about Fiona before and now I do. ‘What is she doing all day while I’m at work? What is she doing in the evening if I’m out? what has she eaten?’” The couple, who have been married since 1997 and share two children together, met while they both worked on GMTV, and although Fiona had never planned to get married, Martin proposed to his now-wife after just four weeks.
Recalling this in an interview with the Daily Mail, Fiona said that her reaction was: "Why would I want to do that? My dad always joked, 'Don’t do what I’ve done, get married and have children.' He was a free spirit and I’m very like him.’" However, despite her dad's warning, Fiona said yes and hasn't looked back since, marrying Martin in a Las Vegas ceremony in May 1997. Discussing the ceremony later, she joked: "I remember filling in the details for the licence and thinking I could have put that I'm marrying Mickey Mouse or Eamonn Holmes and no one would have been the wiser....The fact is, we’re still together." Fiona and Martin have since remained rather private about their relationship, although Fiona has made brief mentions of her family life in her Mirror column. The pair share two sons together, one of whom shares Martin's surname while the other has hers.
