A tennis player was brutally attacked with his own racket after being set upon by a gang of ‘feral’ youths. A man in his 30s was playing tennis with a friend at a park in Salford when he became embroiled in a row with up to 15 teenagers.
It ended with him being hit repeatedly over the head with his own racket by 16-year-old Kai Hardicker. The victim suffered permanent hearing loss in one ear following the senseless attack.
Hardicker, now 19, has been ordered to carry out unpaid work after he admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. Manchester Crown Court heard that the victim had decided to take up tennis following the Covid lockdown, and regularly played at Boothsbank Park in Boothstown, Salford.

At one point one youth went into the court to collect a football. He told the victim to ‘watch it’ and asked if he was going to apologise, the court heard.
He recognised the youth as someone who he’d shared words with previously. The victim later went over to the group and said he’d been ‘out of order’.
After this, the youths began hurling abuse. The football was kicked over into the court again and Hardicker told him ‘don’t you dare touch that football’.
