Lee’s 2016 novel “The Expatriates,” the six-episode limited series follows an international community in Hong Kong whose lives are bound together forever following a sudden family tragedy. Kidman portrays Margaret, a woman who has moved her whole family to Hong Kong. Blue plays career-driven Hilary, whose friendship with Margaret is fractured by fate.
Yoo stars as Mercy, a carefree New Yorker just out of college who becomes entangled in the lives of the Hong Kong expat community. Additionally, Jack Huston will portray David, Hilary’s husband, while Brian Tee will play Clarke, Margaret’s husband. Throughout production, “Expats” has been the subject of much controversy — from the Hong Kong government exempting Kidman from their strict quarantine regime to criticism over the series taking place and filming in Hong Kong despite ongoing political unrest.
Hong Kong media also reported that Kidman walked off the production early — which Amazon Studios denied. “Expats” marks Wang’s first TV project. She is best known for her 2019 film “The Farewell.” In addition to directing the series, Wang also serves as showrunner and writer.
The executive producers include Kidman, Alice Bell, Melanie Marnich, Daniele Melia, Per Saari, Stan Wlodkowski and Theresa Park. Lee is also producing the adaptation. Watch the trailer below.

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief Hong Kong saw “A Guilty Conscience” become the highest-grossing film of all time at its local box office. But the wider cinema market in Hong Kong remained stuck far below pre-pandemic levels. Data from Hong Kong Box Office Limited, a joint venture between Motion Picture Industry Association (MPIA) and the Hong Kong Theatres Association, showed annual cinema revenue of HK$1.43 billion ($184 million) in 2023. That was a 25% improvement on 2022, when the industry was battered by on-off closures due to government COVID-control measures, and managed only HK$1.14 billion ($146 million).

Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief “If you really missed not seeing us on screen together, then ‘The Goldfinger’ is your opportunity to do so,” says Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau of his new crime movie where he is again paired with Tony Leung Chiu-wai (“In the Mood for Love”). The film releases at the end of the month in different parts of Asia and North America (from Dec. 30).
If you’re anything like me, you are still reeling, not over, and have not forgiven Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai for what he did with his Criterion Collection 4K boxset remasters of all his original films (he may be an auteur, one of the true grandmasters of cinema, but his aesthetic revision there is akin to a cinematic crime that rivals what George Lucas did with the “Star Wars” prequels, worse actually).
is back, baby! After decades of wearing her locks long and straight, the actor revived her vintage hairstyle for the Sydney premiere of her new series, Expats. Kidman's Bardot-esque updo showed off her strawberry curls, with a few pieces falling coquettishly across her face. I'm reminded of an elegant spin on Kidman's hairstyle in the most iconic picture of her ever taken—the one where her divorce from Tom Cruise was finalized.Matching the vibe of her sophisticated bedroom hair, I'm describing Kidman's Fendi Couture gown as an elevated naked dress.
