The largest junior doctors strike in NHS history is underway in England, with medics walking out for six days from 7am on Wednesday morning (January 3).
The industrial action comes at one of the busiest times of the year for the NHS as it grapples with increased pressure from winter viruses and a rise in people coming forward who delayed seeking help over the holidays.
The NHS has warned that the strike action, which could see up to half of the medical workforce on picket lines, could cause “the most difficult start to the year the NHS has ever faced”. It said emergency and urgent care will be prioritised during the strikes and almost all routine care will be affected.

But patients are being urged to still come forward to seek care if they need it.

Junior doctors in England are to go on strike for six whole days – the longest strike in NHS history – in a major escalation in the dispute between unions and the Government over pay.
Medics in training from the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association (HCSA) are striking from January 3 at 7am to 7am on January 9.
Almost all pre-planned (elective) hospital services will be affected by strikes as the NHS shifts all of its focus to urgent and emergency care.
Health officials have stressed that people should still seek help if they are unwell. GP and pharmacy services will be unaffected by the industrial action and people are being urged to use these services as they would normally.
