A city council spent nearly £30,000 on a scheme where people can talk to lamp posts about climate change.
The local authority in Dundee used UK Government funding to set up the Hello Lamp Post platform led by Councillor Nadia El-Nakla – wife of First Minister Humza Yousaf.
Locals scan a QR code attached to lamp-posts, fences and bus stops and then record their views.
The council, which is facing a £12million cash shortfall, said the scheme is used by many local authorities to promote “climate literacy” and offer other support services. But the splurge has been criticised by locals and politicians who claim it is a waste of cash.
Scottish Conservative MSP Maurice Golden said: “This well-meaning initiative will strike most people as odd when core local services are being decimated.”
Dundee City Council confirmed the set-up costs were £27,380. Climate convener Heather Anderson and her deputy El-Nakla, both SNP councillors, promoted the scheme last month.
Dundee City Council said: “Hello Lamp Post is used to make people aware of support services.”
