Eminem’s ‘Music to Be Murdered By’: Album Review

If you were to compare Green Day to a cockroach, founding members Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool, and Mike Dirnt might not object. Who knows— they might even express an affinity for a species of insect that’s earned a reputation for being indestructible, knowing what it takes to endure as a punk band that’s forging ahead into its fourth decade.

On “Walls,” Louis Tomlinson steps into a pop landscape very different from that of 2016, when One Direction announced its hiatus. The other members have since cracked through their molds and carved their own identities away from the band: Zayn Malik was out the door before 1D hit the pause button, and had already formulated a moody R&B persona.

With his 2017 self-titled debut album, Mura Masa — a.k.a. 23-year-old Channel Islands spawn Alex Crossan — was nominated for two Grammys, including Best Dance Album, and later won one for his remix of Haim’s “Walking Away.” Guests on the album ranged from A$AP Rocky and Charli XCX to Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn and Desiigner.

Eminem took everyone by surprise and dropped his Alfred Hitchcock-inspired Music To Be Murdered By album out of the sky on Friday (Jan. 17). Slim Shady had a lot to get off his chest with his Kamikaze follow-up, which is made up of 20 tracks and includes a myriad of guests like his former Slaughterhouse running mates, sans Joe Budden, the late Juice WRLD, Don Toliver, Young M.A., Ed Sheeran, and more. 

While Eminem’s surprise new album, Music to Be Murdered By, doesn’t come packed with quite as many aggressive diss lines as 2018’s Kamikaze, there’s still plenty of stray shots directed at his competition. Over the course of 20 tracks, Em takes aim at perennial rivals like Machine Gun Kelly, Nick Cannon, Lord Jamar, and Joe Budden. He also saves some bars for fellow Detroit rapper Tee Grizzley as well as Odd Future cohorts Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, The Creator.
