People have been warned to look out for an early warning symptom of dementia which can appear when walking up or down a set of stairs.
The degenerative condition, which is though to affect more than 994,000 people in the UK, can affect your memory as well as the way you think, act and behave.
For this reason, it can be incredibly hard to watch someone you love suffer from dementia. There currently isn't a cure, so the focus is on catching it early and being aware of the risk factors - some of which include diabetes, obesity and smoking.
According to the NHS, if you're over the age of 65 and becoming increasingly forgetful, then it's recommended you have a chat with your GP about dementia. But it's not just memory loss that can be a sign of the condition, the Express reports.
Dementia charity Alzheimer Scotland shared the specific movement-related red flag sign you might spot when someone is using the stairs. People with dementia therefore may be more likely to slip and fall when using the stairs, as well as having difficulty lifting their legs up to walk.
Because of this, the charity warned that people may tend to 'shuffle' rather than walk, which can be more dangerous, as it's more likely to result in an injury.
It explains: “People often assume that memory loss and dementia are one and the same, but there are other key symptoms and signs to look out for.
“Every person with dementia is different. How their illness affects them depends on which areas of their brain are most damaged.”
It's recommended that you arrange a GP appointment if you're in any way concerned about any dementia symptoms.
There are ways to make stairs safer if you're worried about a loved one suffering an injury, according to the Alzheimer's Society.
