A plea will be made this week for all councillors to unite and demand more support from the Scottish Government to fund police and fire services in Dumfries and Galloway.
Cuts to these emergency services has triggered serious “public concern”, according to Abbey Councillor Ian Blake, who is chairman of the police, fire and rescue sub-committee.
Mr Blake will table a motion at the full council meeting on Thursday concerning the underfunding to blue light services, and will call on the Scottish Government to address the issue swiftly.
The motion has been seconded by his Conservative colleague Graham Bell, who is also a member of the police, fire and rescue sub-committee.
It reads: “In view of the level of public concern over the reduction of police resources in Dumfries and Galloway, currently believed to be around 14 per cent, including the withdrawal of community police officers, and the reduction in funding to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service resulting in the withdrawal of fire appliances, together with other measures, that this council fully discusses the position and implications on our communities.”
The motion calls for council leader Gail Macgregor to write to the Scottish Government, “expressing our concerns and seeking assurances that the underfunding to our blue light services will be addressed as a matter of urgency.”
The move comes after fire chiefs in Dumfries and Galloway recently announced that they are unable to plan their emergency service operations properly because of cuts and uncertainty about funding.
