If you're looking for a low maintenance plant to decorate your home with this festive season, a Christmas cactus may be the ideal choice for you.
These quirky plants may not be as popular as the poinsettias that are frequently found in many homes during the festivities, but Christmas cacti look great when they're in full bloom and don't require a great deal of looking after.
According to plant experts, Christmas cacti can live for up to 100 years if they are cared for correctly. But there's one common mistake people often make, which can cause the plant's flowers to drop off and stop growing completely.
The Express reports that under-watering can wreak havoc on your Christmas cactus, and this is a common error that people tend to make due to other types of cacti not taking well to water.
But the Christmas cacti is different, according to experts at West Coast Gardens.
They said: "Unlike what you’re used to, the Christmas cactus enjoys the water and prefers to be watered frequently, making sure to get all the soil soaked.
“Although you should allow the soil to dry out a bit between your scheduled waterings, never let it dry out completely.”
The experts warned that under-watering can “stunt your plant’s growth” and cause it to “drop all of its carefully grown blooms”.
Watering a Christmas cactus is simple to do. All you need to do is soak the soil in water until some excess pours out from the pot's drainage points, ensuring that you clear out any excess water from the tray.
Failing to do this can mean the roots become oversaturated and may rot easier.
Gardening experts at Pennington say that proper watering is key to “healthy roots and plump, well-hydrated buds and blooms”.
