The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) has brought in a new rule change that will affect thousands of families on Universal Credit.
From today, parents of children between the ages of 3 and 12 will have to spend more time working, or looking for work, under the conditions of their benefits.
Parents of 3 to 12-year-olds will now need to spend more time in work or applying for jobs, up to a maximum of 30 hours a week. They will have to discuss the increased hours, which will be tailored to their personal circumstances, with their work coach.

Previously, parents of 3 and 4-year-olds were expected to commit to a maximum of 16 hours a week, while parents of 5 to 12-year-olds had to commit to a maximum of 25 hours. Today's changes will not affect self-employed parents of 3-to 12-year-olds, the government said.
It comes as part of the DWP's wider efforts to get more parents back into work. Measures that have already been introduced under the plans include enforcing more regular meetings with work coaches and increasing childcare payments.
In June, the government increased childcare support for low-income families, raising the amount parents on Universal Credit can claim for childcare to up to £951 a month for one child and £1,630 for two or more children - a 47 per cent increase.
As part of its new package, the government also plans to expand free childcare, with 15 free hours available for working parents of two-year-olds from April 2024 and 14 free hours from nine months to the start of school available from September 2024 -
