The DVLA has issued some helpful information for any motorists who wans to sell their car or transfer it on to another person.
Selling your vehicle can be an exciting time, especially if you're then planning on purchasing a new one. However, when you do sell it or transfer it on, there's a quick process that you must follow.
If you've done it through a car trading company, the process is slightly simplified - but whichever way you want to do it, all you'll need is a key piece of information on your vehicle's V5 log book.
The DVLA recently posted a Tweet highlighting the importance of letting them know of any changes to your car ownership.
The Tweet read: "If you've sold a vehicle, it's quicker and easier to tell us online than any other way."
The service, which is active from 7am until 7pm every day, requires users to have their 11-digit document reference number from their vehicle V5C log book to hand.
To use the handy service, visit the gov.uk website and follow the instructions to let the DVLA know if you've sold the vehicle privately to a person or to a business.
You'll also need to provide the full name and address of the new keeper and give them the green ‘new keeper’ slip (V5C/2) so they can tax the vehicle.
The online database will be instantly updated and you won't have to provide any documents either online or through the post.
You'll also receive a refund for any full remaining months of vehicle tax, which will be sent to the address on your log book.
If you've sold the car to a trader, they can use the DVLA online service to let them know it's been sold - with your consent of course.
When your personal details are removed from the car's record you're no longer legally responsible for it, which is why the dealer
