A man who killed a pregnant former Hollyoaks actress when he hit her car after filming himself driving at 123mph on a motorway has had his sentence increased. Adil Iqbal, 22, pleaded guilty to killing Frankie Jules-Hough, 38, in a motorway crash and causing serious injury to her son Thomas, 9. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
At the time, the mother-of-two's family described the sentence as "insulting".
Three appeal judges in London on Friday increased Adil Iqbal’s jail term to 15 years after concluding the original sentence was unduly lenient.
They heard that Iqbal, then 22, filmed himself driving at speeds of up to 123mph before losing control of a BMW car on the M66 in Bury, Greater Manchester, in May. Frankie's other son Rocky, two, was also in the car, as was her nephew Tobias, four, who was also badly hurt in the incident on the M66 in Bury, Greater Manchester, on 13 May. Iqbal, from Accrington, Lancashire, filmed himself reaching speeds of 123mph in his father’s BMW before he lost control and crashed into Ms Jules-Hough’s Skoda Fabia, which had pulled over on the hard shoulder with a tyre puncture.
He was driving with one hand and holding his phone with the other to film himself, possibly to upload to Facebook, as he tailgated and undertook other vehicles and swerved across lanes, reaching a speed of 123mph in his father’s BMW car. Iqbal admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was banned from driving for 14 years. Frankie, Tommy, Rocky and Tobias - all from Chadderton in Oldham - were transported to hospital via air ambulance.
