Vandals who daubed anti-monarchy graffiti on a Manchester playing fields wall have been slammed. Two messages appeared on the wall on Hough End Fields in Withington this morning (Saturday) as Charles was officially declared King.
One, painted in larger black letters, read: "Make Elizabeth the last!"
A second message, beside it, added: "No tears for Lizzy, end the Monarchy now". Residents and walkers expressed their disgust following the Queen's death on Thursday.

"I think it’s terrible," a 68-year-old woman who lives nearby told the Manchester Evening News. " Graffiti is bad enough, but we don’t need things like that at a time like this. I support the monarch as it is a symbol of Britain."
The woman, who asked not to be named, added: "I just don’t understand why anyone would want to do something like that.
"I couldn’t believe how insensitive it was."
Another neighbour initially thought the graffiti was linked to the controversial development to extend the leisure centre at the site. He said: "At first I thought it might be about what the council are doing with this land as there has been a lot of local opposition to that.
"But when I saw it, I thought it was totally out of order. Whatever we think about the monarchy and whether we should be a republic, we have to show respect after death of a 96 year-old lady who has been our head of state for 70 years."
Hough End has been at the centre of a bitter row over the construction of all-weather football pitches and a car park. Campaigners believe the building goes against Manchester council’s own environmental targets.
