Across the country today, ceremonies will be held in major cities to proclaim the accession of King Charles III. The new monarch was officially proclaimed yesterday in a historic ceremony at St James's Palace, but now announcements will take place across the UK in a centuries-old tradition.
The ceremonies were originally created to be the first way members of the public would learn about the news. Although this is not the case anymore, they mark a significant moment in the accession of the new King and the mourning of Queen Elizabeth.
Ceremonies are open to the public and will see public figures make speeches. Manchester will see King Charles III's proclamation at 1pm in St Peter's Square, following similar proclamations to the people of London, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast which will take place earlier. This is the official 'county' proclamation, and will see Lord Mayor of Manchester Cllr Donna Ludford and Lord-Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Diane Hawkins will give introductory addresses before High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Lorraine Worsley-Carter MBE reads the proclamation.

Metrolink services through St Peter's Square will be paused from 11.30am until 2pm.

No replacement bus services will operate during the closure.
