Michael Beale has challenged Cyriel Dessers to click into gear as Kemar Roofe sweats over another spell on the sidelines.
The Rangers boss admits the Nigerian has yet to catch fire at Ibrox but he’ll get the chance with frontman Danilo also out for the long term. Roofe will miss Saturday's Premiership clash against Aberdeen and has been sent for scans after picking up a groin injury in the 4-0 midweek win against Livingston.
Todd Cantwell, Nico Raskin, Kieran Dowell and Tom Lawrence are all likely to be out until after next month’s international break. And Beale is looking to stars such as Dessers to step up with the jury still out with supporters. He said: “Yeah, listen, I think there’s a couple of things. Cyriel would like to do better. That’s a fact. I don’t think he’s shown his full level yet. He has got three goals and a couple of assists.
“I think he’s been really unlucky. If you think back to clear and obvious, we scored a goal in midweek and because it’s not clear and obvious it gets given. Two weeks before in a game of more importance (against Celtic) we had a goal chalked off and again it’s this clear and obvious thing.
“If he gets the assist there and adds that assist to his one against PSV then I think people will see him not only as a goalscorer because his pass for Rabbi Matondo was fantastic and his awareness in that moment to set up Kemar Roofe and even earlier in that game when he’s offside and he’s crossed for Rabbi Matondo.
“So I think in moments he has shown but of course he’s looking for a rhythm and a consistency. He’s been out of the team recently so it’s an opportunity for him if he plays to come in and stake a claim for sure.”
