After delighting audiences on our screens for over 23 years as Coronation Street’s Peter Barlow, actor Chris Gascoyne broke the hearts of fans everywhere last month when he revealed he was leaving the show to pursue other projects. Although no further details were given about his upcoming exit storyline, or if the much-loved character would return in the future, fans couldn’t help but feel the sting of losing one of the ITV soap’s much loved characters.
Over the years, Peter has been involved in a number of high-profile storylines including everything from numerous affairs, tackling the hard hitting issue of alcoholism and of course, a long fought custody battle involving his son Simon Barlow. Most recently, Peter has even been embroiled in the case of Rufus Donahue’s death, after it was revealed Peter had stolen and pawned one of Rufus’ watches before Stephen Reid murdered him! Thankfully however, while Peter is no stranger to nail-biting scenes on screen, Chris’s real life away from the soap is far less dramatic! Here’s everything we know about his life off screen.
Early life Born on 31 January 1968, Chris started his life in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, when he was born to working class parents. Both of his grandfathers previously worked in the mines, while his father Derrik was a greengrocer and florist who later became a milkman.
Although born in Nottinghamshire, Chris also spent a significant part of his early life in Gateshead in the North East living with his mother and grandparents. He was very close to his grandfather, Tom in particular, along with his Irish grandmother, Kitty.
They later came to live with the family in Sutton-in-Ashfield after Kitty was sadly diagnosed with early onset dementia.
