There’s always room for another bad girl in Hollyoaks, and Sherrie Hewson feels her latest role is one she was born to play. Famous for appearing in the Carry On films, Crossroads, Coronation Street and, of course, Benidorm, Sherrie reveals that her Hollyoaks character, Martha Blake, is unlike any other she’s portrayed in the past. “I’ve never been an out-andout baddie before – I just love it!” exclaims Sherrie.
“Joyce Temple-Savage [Sherrie’s Benidorm character] was a bit of a b***h, but very funny. And then in Coronation Street I played Maureen Webster, and she was a drip. “But being a baddie like Martha – it’s obviously who I really am because I feel as though I’m in my own skin.
I can be so evil, so horrible, it’s fantastic.” Sherrie, 73, has joined the E4 soap as Martha – the grandmother of Sienna Blake (Anna Passey) and Dilly Harcourt (Emma Johnsey-Smith). But she’s not the only new Blake on the block as Jeremy “Jez” Blake also arrives in the village to be reunited with his family. Jez is a familiar face to Hollyoaks fans as he is the twin brother of the late Patrick Blake, and is played by the same actor, Jeremy Sheffield.
Viewers will remember Patrick for manipulating his daughter Sienna and inflicting horrific abuse on his girlfriend Maxine. He got his comeuppance in 2016 when he was murdered by his granddaughter Nico. But Sherrie warns Jez is even worse than his brother, and explains Martha is determined to keep him well away from her unsuspecting granddaughters.
“Jez is the most evil of them all,” teases Sherrie. “We know Patrick was awful, but Martha knows that Jeremy is even worse. When the girls run into him it’s like they’ve seen a ghost – they don’t believe it.
