Claire Sweeney - ‘I’m perimenopausal, I’m so glad women are talking about it’

Claire Sweeney is having the time of her life - just as the perimenopause strikes.The actress, 52, is thrilled to have landed the role of Cassandra Plummer on Coronation Street and is happy at home with her son Jaxon, eight. Starting the perimenopause - the time just before the menopause - means that Claire has mild symptoms including anxiety. However, her doctor is helping her keep things under control - and she’s yet to have a hot flush.
For Claire, she’s happy to speak up and contribute to the national conversation. “It’s fantastic that women are talking about it,” says Claire. “I remember my mum going on HRT patches for hot sweats.
But I don’t remember all these conversations about menopause when I was younger. I think it’s great.” So far Claire has found herself suffering from occasional anxiety but her doctor has helped her find solutions. “I’m not in the menopause at the moment,” explains Claire.
“I’m what they call perimenopausal. But it does affect you. I get a bit of anxiety sometimes but I’ve got it in hand because I’m taking the things you need to take to keep it in hand.” Though Claire jokes that she doesn’t know whether occasional lapses in memory are down to hormones or simply being a working mum.
“Sometimes I wonder if I’m menopausal with memory loss,” laughs Claire. “But sometimes I think, ‘Maybe I’ve just got a lot on! I’m a single mum, I’ve got a lot to remember!’” Claire’s character Cassandra is Evelyn’s daughter and Tyrone’s mother, which makes her grandmother to Hope and Ruby. However, Claire isn’t precious about playing a granny.
She laughs, “Women my age are grandmothers. It’s just that I left Jaxon late. It will be lovely playing a grandmother in Corrie.” Unlike Claire, who lights up a room with
