A cheese producer at the centre of a rare E.coli outbreak has released an update on which products shoppers must not consume, after an outbreak of food poisoning was linked to a batch of cheese frequently sold at Waitrose and in gift hampers.
Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire Cheese, which is run out of a dairy farm near Preston, was linked to eight people falling ill with a new variant of the common food poisoning bug that produces the Shiga toxin - symptoms of which include severe stomach cramps and bloody diarrhoea.
In the first recall, a series of products put on sale after October 1, 2023, were included as products with a risk of containing Shiga toxin producing E.coli, often shortened to STEC. After an investigation by the business and Preston City Council, the products that could contain this toxin have been narrowed down to five, all produced before February 5.

The Mrs Kirkham's branded cheeses that should not be eaten are: Mild & Creamy Lancashire, Tasty Lancashire, Mature Lancashire, Smoked Lancashire, No 1 Waitrose & Partners, Farmhouse Kirkham’s Lancashire Cheese. If you have any of these cheeses dated before February 5, you should not consume them and instead return them to the store for a full refund.
The implicated cheeses may be in several formats, including cut-to-order and wrapped in plain waxed paper from a deli counter, prepacked pieces of cheese purchased or gifted to you that was purchased on or prior to the 5th of February. The recalled products may have been included in a hamper or been sold as part of a charcuterie grazing platter.
If you have any of these products, make sure that they are thoroughly wrapped and have not come
