Financial pressure can start to mount over the festive season and it’s important for every household to make sure they are not missing out on any additional support they are entitled to. This includes checking your eligibility for a Council Tax Reduction (CTR), a unique discount only available to people living in Scotland, that could reduce your annual bill by an average of £750.
Even though the new Council Tax year started in April, most households choose to pay their annual bill through monthly instalments - usually over 10 or 12 months. However, entitlement to a CTR could see people receive a lump sum back payment or credit added to their bill.
Many people could be eligible for a Council Tax discount or reduction of between 25 and 100 per cent, potentially saving hundreds of pounds each year. The upcoming festive season is also the perfect time to have a look at boosting your finances before the new year begins and putting in claims or applications for help you may be entitled to.
Those living alone or only with children, people on a low income, students, those with a carer or a specific medical diagnosis, and even people with empty properties are among those who could cut their annual bill. Those eligible can also save up to 35 per cent on their water and waste charges.
The latest figures from the Scottish Government show that 460,750 households received a CTR in September 2023, which means around one-in-five households were saving money through the scheme.
However, while this scheme mostly supports households on a lower income, help is also available for middle-earners or people finding it difficult to keep up with payments - especially those on a higher band.
