Some 110 years ago, the Arcade on Lapwing Lane in West Didsbury was the place to go if you needed some fresh fruit, sewing supplies or a bag of penny sweets.
In the years since 1913, the Arcade has seen many shops come and go. But it still remains a focal part of the local community. While not granted official historical status, the arcade’s glass canopy and steep ironwork stanchions tell a story of a bygone era.
Built by a collective of local shopkeepers at the time, the Edwardian shopping arcade brought local traders together and protected customers from the elements whilst offering an attractive shop front at the same time.

While the Arcade still stands today, it was very nearly gone altogether until a group of residents rallied together to save the landmark from ruin. Forming the Friends of Lapwing Lane Arcade (FOLLA) group in 2012, more than £95,000 was raised to restore and refurbish the cast iron structure and work was completed some nine years ago.
“It was a very nice parade back in the pre-war days and during the war,” Mike Bath, FOLLA Treasurer and Trustee, tells the M.E.N. “It was a relatively posh shopping area at the time with a nice bakery, a grocery store and a haberdashery.
“But over the years, it was falling to rack and ruin. I remember in around 2008, I spoke to one of the shopkeepers and asked why they didn’t do something about the Arcade and they said none of them could agree on anything and the money needed was just too much.
“Nothing was happening and no real progress was being made, so I decided to take on the task of sorting it out.”
