White House says Biden believes Saudi Arabia has sided with Russia after OPEC+ cut

The White House said Tuesday that President Biden believes Saudi Arabia has effectively sided with Russia’s war aims in Ukraine following the Riyadh-led OPEC+ alliance’s announcement last week that it would cut oil production. "We believe by the decision that OPEC+ made last week, (Saudi Arabia is) certainly aligning themselves with Russia," White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a Tuesday briefing.

White House defends Biden's 'Armageddon' comment, says no indication Russia preparing to use nuclear weapons

The White House on Friday said it has seen no indication Russia is preparing to use nuclear weapons despite comments made by President Biden warning the U.S. has not "faced the prospect of Armageddon" in 60 years.  "We have not seen any reason to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture, nor do we have indications that Russia is preparing to imminently use nuclear weapons," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One.  Jean-Pierre defended comments made by the president earlier Friday, saying, "The kind of irresponsible rhetoric we have seen is no way for the leader of a nuclear-armed state to speak, and that’s what the president was making very clear." White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre speaks during a daily briefing at the White House in Washington Sept.

Russia Fines TikTok $51,000 for Violating Anti-LGBTQ “Propaganda” Law

Interfax.Russian authorities had previously warned TikTok that fines would be imposed if the content remained accessible to Russian TikTok users, reports Reuters.Russia’s “propaganda” law was first adopted in 2013 to ban the spread of information about “non-traditional sexual relations” among minors. This includes any mention of homosexuality, sex education curricula that incorporate lessons about HIV/AIDS and condom use, mentions of LGBTQ historical figures, or content that depicts homosexuality, gender-nonconformity, or failure to conform to sex-based stereotypes in a neutral or positive light.A wide swath of actions, displays, or even inanimate objects have been deemed “violations” of the law, including a teenager’s decision to post pictures of shirtless men who were deemed to “look” homosexual to social media, scenes from a movie about Elton John, the mere existence of an LGBTQ advocacy group, Netflix movie and TV show offerings, a group of World Cup attendees wearing rainbow-colored shirts that appeared to form a “rainbow flag,” and even a bank note that depicted a partially-nude statue of the greek god Apollo.Despite being declared discriminatory by the European Court of Human Rights, Russian lawmakers recently moved to expand the law beyond minors to apply to all adults. As such, any depictions of homosexuality or LGBTQ identity in media, on the Internet, on social media networks, or in the public square, will be outlawed and punished with a fine. The law could even threaten public health by making it illegal for doctors to acknowledge a patient’s sexual orientation or gender identity.Russian authorities justify the law by claiming they are seeking to protect Russian citizens from being corrupted by “liberal values”

Roku’s Big TV Hire: Can Charlie Collier Work ‘Mad Men’ Magic on Streaming Company’s Content Strategy?

Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor Charlie Collier, after more than two decades in broadcasting and cable TV, has jumped ship from the traditional television biz — betting that TV’s future is all about streaming. As first reported by Variety, Collier is leaving his post as CEO of Fox Entertainment, departing from the Murdochs’ fiefdom to head up Roku Media, where he’ll oversee content and ad sales for the Roku Channel starting next month. For Roku, recruiting the high-profile TV exec who brought such hits as “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “The Walking Dead” to the small screen can be viewed as a shift toward more strategic — rather than tactical — spending on original content. Not incidentally, Collier also is familiar with the content economics of the free-streaming space: Fox Corp. spent $440 million to buy Tubi in 2020, which has served as a monetization outlet for Fox TV programming.
