Staff at a care home failed to check on an elderly woman with dementia who routinely used the rubbish bin in her room as a toilet, an ombudsman’s report has said. The daughter of the vulnerable woman, complained that workers at Gorton Parks Care Home, where her mum resided, continually failed to meet her mother’s care needs and she often found she had urinated in a rubbish bin.
She said that problems with her mother’s care also included not supporting her to eat properly and leaving her unwashed and in unclean clothes. A recently published adult social care ombudsman’s report said that Gorton Parks Care Home, on Taylor Street, Gorton, was a care provider for the woman (referred to as Ms Y) on behalf of Manchester City Council.
The woman’s daughter is identified in the report as Miss X. The report said that Gorton Parks’ care plan for Ms Y included that staff check on her every hour; that staff were made aware that she wrapped food in tissues or hid it in her handbag; and that she had a history of going to the toilet in bins.

The ombudsman said that the council did not address Ms X’s concern that her mother was ‘using the rubbish bin in her room as a toilet every day’.
The ombudsman also published evidence after a further complaint of poor record keeping of the hourly checks on Ms Y. The report said: “On Christmas Day, 2023, the records say Ms X
