The Canary Islands are facing imminent 'collapse' due to the influx of tourists flooding the holiday hotspot, experts have warned.
Canary Islands such as Tenerife and Lanzarote are well-loved by Brits searching for all year round sunshine but it appears to be having a devastating effect from over-tourism, the Mirror reports.
Urban planners have said that tourism numbers must be reduced as its infrastructure is under enormous strain which is no longer sustainable.
Campaign group Ben Magec-Ecologists in Action have spoken out after tourist figures for 2023 revealed a record number of visitors - 48 million. By one estimate, as many as half of these are Brits.
A report read: "The Canary Islands territory was more than overexploited. We had exceeded the carrying capacity of the territory by seven times, resulting in a scenario of systemic collapse due to the urban development structure."
Locals are now beginning to push back on the influx of visitors. On Tenerife, protesters have even begun demanding an "eco-tax" for tourists. The slogan "tourists go home" has become popular.
