If all goes to plan, Manchester City's latest expansion of the Etihad Stadium will be completed in around 12 months' time, ready for the 2025/26 season. The steel structures rising out of the back of the North Stand, and the start of the two wings that will be turned into a hotel and museum, already show the sheer scale of what the development will look like.
The sight of a scale model this week brought the exciting prospect of the expansion into focus, particularly the external fan park, hotel and sky walk. But it is inside the Etihad where the work will hold more interest for supporters, for all the matchday experience could be improved with a covered fan zone and museum.
The expansion will see all four stands in the ground to three tiers and should allow more local fans currently unable to get tickets to attend City matches. The hope will be that the atmosphere will improve with more fans behind the team and a huge tier behind the goal designed to increase the noise from the end currently housing the family stand.
However, there are concerns among fan groups over the number of season tickets on offer in the new stand, as well as matchday tickets that will be available for those who can't get a coveted season card. The fear from supporters is that the development will be used to add more hospitality options that will generate more income for the club, potentially at the expense of atmosphere.
