The Blues may still end the summer with some activity, and there have been mixed messages from the decision-makers, from Pep Guardiola, to Txiki Begiristain, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and club owner Sheikh Mansour. Starting with Guardiola, the manager understandably remained tight-lipped towards the end of the season over plans for 2024/25, so as not to look too far ahead when there were still titles to win.
Speaking before the final day of the Premier League campaign, Guardiola said: "I don't know next season. We have to see how we finish, sometimes the decision depends on how we finish the season.
"The player who has a good season, is already done. Nothing changes how the season is in the last two games. We have to wait. Now I'm not thinking for one second about next season."
When City won the Premier League and then lost the FA Cup final, Guardiola offered a similar verdict but did pass on what he had been told by Sporting Director Txiki Begiristain - as well as hint at outgoings dictating who would come in.
"I don’t know right now. I know some players have to take a decision on whether they stay with us, some players might come," he said. "My sporting director says everything is fine for next year but right now I don’t know what might happen."
