Following the encounter, Valverde believes it was a good test against Erik ten Hag's side, despite admitting it was a shame that his side could not hang on for the victory. He described how Sancho ensured the Reds caused the Spanish side problems in the opening stages of the encounter which surprised them initially before they settled down and were able to take the lead.
Speaking to Spanish publication AS, Valverde said: “Match against an opponent of a good level, in an unbeatable stadium. We started badly, in the first minutes they surprised us with some play in which Sancho was left alone against Unai (Simón), but then we settled down and we were much better.
"With his speed and his technique, we were always on the edge. We were also hurting them.
"They pushed us a lot and we were defending the centers well. It is difficult against a team of these.
