Five men are currently on trial at Liverpool Crown Court accused of her murder, the Liverpool Echo reports. Jurors previously heard James Witham had knocked down the door of her house, where she was spending the evening alone with her dachshund Darla, before entering and shooting her with a Skorpion submachine gun.
The 41-year-old is expected to claim that he did not see or hear Ashley and was instead attempting to 'send a message' to her boyfriend Lee Harrison, who was not present at the time. The court was told more about events following the shooting on Friday (October 13), with another defendant, Joseph Peers, said to have booked a two-night stay at the Mercure Hotel in St Helens for the evenings of August 21 and 22 via Booking.com.

He checked into the twin room with two beds at 8.31pm on the former date and paid the £143 bill in cash, after he and Witham had travelled there in a taxi, jurors heard. At around 6.45pm the following evening, both men were seen on CCTV leaving the hotel before being driven away in Mr Peers' dad's white van, the court was told.
