Experts are torn about whether Manchester City’s Premier League titles will be stripped should they be found guilty of financial violations by an independent commission.
The Daily Mail reported on Thursday that City will go head-to-head with top-flight chiefs next autumn. The Premier League allege 155 offences have been committed between 2009 and 2018 relating to breaching financial regulations.

That has heightened speculation about what punishment City could face should their legal defence fail in 2024. Points deductions have been mooted but there are also suggestions Pep Guardiola’s side could be relegated from the top flight - with their silverware stripped.
Doing so would be an unprecedented moment in English football, with no club ever being relieved of their titles. Swindon Town were denied promotion to the First Division - and relegated to the third tier - after being found guilty of financial infringements in 1990.
Dan Plumley, a football money expert, has suggested losing their trophies is a “possibility” for City. He said: "In terms of possibility, the answer is yes. I think there is a possibility of all of those things. But all of those things were on the table before the Everton verdict as well.
