Armed police flooded a busy shopping street after a man thought to be armed with a knife was seen smashing windows and 'behaving erratically'. Police closed the road and advised residents to stay indoors following the incident in Broughton, Salford, at 4.30pm on Monday.
The man then entered a terraced house on Leicester Road and threatened to harm himself. Following a negotiation with specialist police officers he was detained a short time later and taken to hospital to be assessed.
Police have described it as an isolated incident and say there is no threat to the wider public. Pictures from the scene show a terraced house with its ground and first floor windows smashed.

Witnesses said furniture, including two armchairs and a coat stand, appeared to have been thrown into the front yard. The back gate of the house had also been 'taken off its hinges', a witness said.
Despite the warning one witness said 'hundreds' of people gathered at the scene on the busy shopping street. They added: "There are hundreds of people in the street. Everyone is out of their houses.
"There are multiple police cars here, including an incident command van. The police tape is on the floor now, there's no cordon any more."
