The incident happened at about 12.55pm on Saturday, prompting GMP to respond to reports that a man had been deliberately hit by a vehicle, thought to be a silver or grey VW Golf or Polo.
The victim was pinned against a wooden post by the vehicle, which 'deliberately mounted a pavement', according to GMP.
A resident has told the M.E.N. he saw the man being hit by a car with a 'group of youths' inside. The episode then took a violent turn, he claimed. "I just saw some youths in a car," he said.
"They pulled up on the pavement and trapped a guy’s leg. I saw one of them trying to attack him through the window of the car.
“He got his leg out and then one of the youths got out the car and brandished a knife that was in a case, like a holster."
The witness said the car was then pushed along by one of the youths as it 'wouldn't start', before the group managed to escape.
Appealing for witnesses to come forward, Detective Chief Inspector Yanica Weir said: "This was a clearly targeted attack, in which a vehicle was used as a weapon.
"We are keen to trace the suspect(s) in this matter as quickly as possible and would be grateful if anyone who may have any dashcam, doorbell, CCTV or mobile phone footage
