Two women were taken to hospital after a dog attack today. A police helicopter was scrambled as part of the response to the incident at Howe Bridge, Atherton, Leigh, by armed officers.
Police closed Leigh Road in the town while they carried out a search of the area and a dog was seized. They had responded to reports of one dog attacking another on playing fields this morning at Jubilee Park.
Ambulance crews were called as the owners of two dogs were injured after they tried to separate them when one attacked another. One person commented on social media: "There was a female with her hands all bandaged up getting into the ambulance."

Another local posted: "I've just been told by a police officer that they attended to a dog attack where two people, including the owner who has been found, and another dog had been attacked. The dog, an XL bully, has been seized but not yet put down until its been advised by a judge in court today."
In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 11.30am this morning (Saturday 2 September), officers were called to reports of a dog attacking another dog on a playing field near Leigh Road.
"Specialist officers and emergency services attended the scene, and the owners of both animals were taken to hospital with bite injuries which are not life threatening and not believed to be life changing.
"Initial enquries suggest that the offending dog broke free from its collar and attacked another dog in the field. When both owners attempted to separate the dogs, the two owners were injured. The other dog is in serious condition and receiving treatment.
