A guest on Antiques Roadshow at the weekend was left utterly stunned when he found out the true value of an £8 vase he bought at a charity shop.
BBC expert Lars Tharp bowled the unsuspecting person well and truly over when he announced that the second-hand find was actually a Ming Dynasty vase which is worth an astonishing amount - slightly more than the £7.99 he’d originally shelled out.
The man, who went along to Liverpool’s Palm House Sefton Park for the TV event which was broadcast on Sunday, had brought in three items to be valued - the vase, along with a plate and a china bowl. The bowl was from the Qing Dynasty and was purchased for £50 but Lars said it could reach up to £3,000 at auction.
He also revealed the plate, which had been purchased for £400, was actually worth anything up to £1,500. But it was the vase that was the big deal on the day - worth a staggering £10,000.
Lars said: “This is an ancient shape. The question is, is it ancient? Let's just look at this base, shall we? These lumpy little brackets...these feet with that lovely orange tinge where the glaze meets the body, that to me, suggests that it is Ming Dynasty." The guest then replied: “
"Ming? Really Ming? Oh my god," the guest couldn't believe what he was hearing and revealed he purchased the vase for £7.99 at a charity shop. "Ker-ching," And Lars said. "I think if it goes through the various tests in my mind, a piece like that would probably fetch somewhere between £5,000 and £10,000."
