Matt Smith Says Prince Harry Called Him ‘Granddad’ Because of Prince Philip Role on ‘The Crown’: ‘He Watched the Show!’

Zack Sharf Matt Smith was a staple of Netflix’s “The Crown” during its first two seasons, where he starred as Prince Philip opposite Claire Foy’s Queen Elizabeth II. Smith’s portrayal of the British royal not only earned critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination, but it also generated an unexpected response from Philip’s grandson, Prince Harry. Smith revealed on “Today” that Prince Harry once addressed him as “granddad” when they met while playing polo. “I met Harry once, at polo, which sounds a bit grand, but it wasn’t that grand,” Smith said. “And he walked up to me and went, ‘Granddad.’” Smith added, “He watched the show! Well, I can’t claim to know if he watches it currently, but he watched a bit of it then.”

‘Victim’ Review: A Mother’s Love and a Son’s Lie Expose a Community Corroded by Hate and Politics

Jessica Kiang It isn’t that people’s first instincts are bad in “Victim,” Slovak director Michal Blaško’s compelling, apprehensive feature debut. A distraught Ukrainian mother travelling back to her adopted home in the Czech Republic to be by her injured son’s hospital bedside, for example, will find someone willing to drive her when her bus is delayed. It’s just that once they find those instincts lining up with their pre-existing prejudices — say, when the boy alleges, or heavily implies, that the ones who beat him up were of Roma background — then those same people will erase all nuance, ignore all complexity, and do almost anything to drink further into the intoxication of righteous moral outrage. Even if it means shoring up a teenager’s lie.
