Despite progressing to the last 16 as winners of Group C, England have flattered to deceive in Germany so far, following up their narrow 1-0 win against Serbia with an uninspiring 1-1 draw with Denmark and a goalless draw with Slovenia in Serbia. England struggled to threaten the Slovenia goal in the first half and only began to look more dangerous going forward when they introduced Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon from the bench in the closing stages. Speaking as a pundit on ITV, the ex Celtic gaffer said: "There are solutions there (for Gareth), it's a lot more difficult when you don't (have them). There is a lot to ponder for him.
"Some guys came on and made an impact in the game. I think they were crying out for more technical players tonight and the balance wasn't right. Gareth addressed it at half time but that is going to be the challenge for the next game.
"The objective is always to get to the knockout stage but I think you need some momentum going into it. They have got a few days to think about that and I think Gareth has got a bit of thinking to do around what kind of line-up he puts in."
