Mayor Andy Burnham has called for an 'urgent meeting' as residents in and around Bury have been left to endure a 'sickening' landfill stench.
Locals living near the Pilsworth South Landfill site, situated next to the M66 between Bury and Heywood, have described the smells emanating from the site as 'awful' and like 'sticking your head in a bag of rotten meat'.
The stench has also hit residents in Darnhill, Summit, Heady Hill, and Heap Bridge in Rochdale, who have also been vocal about the 'horrendous' smell, with some even reporting feeling physically sick.

The scale of the issue also prompted a petition to be started online, that attracted over 3,000 signatures, calling for an investigation into the matter.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has now called for an 'urgent meeting' with the Environment Agency, adding his visit to the landfill site "took me aback."
"Yesterday I was invited over to the Pilsworth landfill site by the Leaders of Rochdale and Bury councils to hear the concerns of local residents about the stench," Mr Burnham wrote this week. "What I experienced took me aback. I am now calling an urgent meeting with the Environment Agency to require immediate action."
In an updated post on Sunday (March 3), Mr Burnham confirmed a meeting had been organised for March 13, writing: "In the meantime, I expect urgent action to be taken to address the causes of this appalling hazard."
