Andy Burnham has backed calls for a VAT cut for pubs, restaurants and clubs. The Greater Manchester mayor told an audience at the Night Time Economy Summit on Thursday (February 8) that he wants VAT to be reduced to 10 per cent for the hospitality industry.
It comes after his night time economy adviser Sacha Lord called for the move last year. The Warehouse Project and Parklife founder said hospitality VAT should be cut from 20 per cent to 12.5 per cent as it was following the pandemic - but Mr Burnham went further.
The mayors of the Liverpool City Region and West Yorkshire - Steve Rotheram and Tracy Brabin - also supported the move when asked on a panel at the event in Manchester. But West Midlands mayor Andy Street told the audience 'it ain't going to happen'.

Mr Street said: "I would love that to happen, but it ain't going to happen in this budget. What we need to think about is what we ask the Chancellor to do and what he will do right now."
The Conservative mayor said he has spoken to the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt about lowering employer contributions to national insurance, warning hospitality businesses in the audience that this will be going up as the National Living Wage increases. The minimum wage for workers aged 23 and over will increase to £10.42 from April, meaning employers will face an increase in costs.
It comes after a staggering number of hospitality businesses in Greater Manchester closed last year with many citing the aftershocks of the pandemic and rising energy bills. More high profile closures have been announced this year too, including Greens in Didsbury.
Responding to the West Midlands mayor, Mr Rotheram said that the calls to

Guy Lodge Film Critic In “Porcelain War,” a resilient Ukrainian couple divide their time between two seemingly antithetical pursuits: When enterprising Slava Leontyev isn’t training fellow civilian soldiers in the ongoing fight against Russia’s invasion, he and his partner Anya Stasenko are skilled ceramic artists, casting and painting dainty porcelain figurines inspired by local nature and folklore. If the title already suggests something pointed in that disparity, this emotive debut by Leontyev and American co-director Brendan Bellomo leaves nothing to chance in ensuring we get it: Porcelain, we are told, is “fragile but everlasting, and can be restored after hundreds of years.” Lest the point still be lost on us, the couple’s combined voiceover later offers a blunter paraphrase: “Ukraine is like porcelain — easy to break, but impossible to destroy.” The metaphor is clear enough, then; whether it’s quite complex enough to sustain a feature-length documentary is another question.
